PLH Arkitekter and Monoma Denmark announce strategic collaboration

Monoma Denmark and PLH Arkitekter are proud to announce a strategic partnership aimed at transforming vacant buildings into vibrant, community-driven spaces. This collaboration brings together PLH’s architectural innovation and Monoma’s expertise in temporary use and property activation, offering a powerful solution to one of Denmark’s most pressing urban challenges: vacant real estate.

Across Denmark, cities are struggling with the growing issue of underutilized buildings: from empty offices and care homes to disused schools and factories. These spaces often become liabilities, attracting vandalism, squatting, and decay. But Monoma and PLH see opportunities where others see risk.

Through this collaboration, both organizations are dedicated to repurposing vacant buildings into temporary accommodations, creative work environments, and community facilities. The focus includes developing student housing, artist studios, and adaptable office spaces that are designed to meet functional needs while promoting social and environmental sustainability.

A targeted and strategic approach

This partnership is more than a design collaboration, it’s a strategic response to the housing shortage, urban decay, and the need for more inclusive, adaptable city planning. Monoma provides effective solutions for the temporary utilization of empty properties, while PLH contributes deep architectural knowledge, consultancy, regulatory engagement, and planning services.

This approach creates value for property owners, end users, and the broader community

“For instance, we can temporarily transform vacant buildings into youth housing, addressing critical needs in many municipalities. This approach creates value for property owners, end users, and the broader community,” notes Emilie Weilby, Country Manager at Monoma Denmark. Claus Johannessen, Senior Project Manager at PLH Arkitekter, adds: “Activating a building through temporary functions opens an opportunity to explore long-term strategies. Our experience enables us to guide properties towards sustainable, permanent uses.”

A proven model

As part of Mosaic World, Monoma brings over 30 years of experience in temporary property use, having facilitated the creation of more than 100,000 temporary spaces across Europe. In Denmark, Monoma has already successfully transformed buildings in Helsingør and Gentofte into vibrant mixed-use developments. PLH Arkitekter contributes extensive experience in sustainable urban architecture and project delivery. Together, PLH Arkitekter and Monoma are advancing a model that is efficient, adaptable, and prepared for future urban challenges.
