Working as a caretaker is much more than a chore: it is a unique opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives. In this interview, Mathias, caretaker at our refugee shelter in Tilburg, shares his experiences. He talks about the versatility of his role, the challenges he faces on a daily basis, and how there is more to this job than most people think at first glance.
I think people sometimes skip our vacancy because they think it is a simple chore. But it is so much more than that; it is challenging, social and extremely rewarding work.
Mathias, caretakerAn important link
“You are definitely not the one who walks around here all day with a dusty smock on and a broom in his hands. You are an incredibly important link at your location and also an important link for the quality of life of the residents. As a caretaker, you ensure that everything runs smoothly and that residents feel comfortable at the location. In addition to ensuring a pleasant and safe environment, daily practice entails many more responsibilities.”
Every day starts with a joint handover with the security staff, the service staff and any other colleagues. “During such a day handover, we take over from the security staff who are on location at night. After this handover, my inspection round follows: is the location clean and safe? Are there any technical defects that need to be reported? Are there any other special features?”
With so many people living together, challenges can sometimes arise. “Of course, tensions can always arise between residents. At large locations, tensions can arise between residents. In such situations, we work together with social workers and other professionals to find solutions. We enforce the house rules, while social workers take care of the social aspect. It is real teamwork.”

New tasks and room for growth
At Mosaic World, Mathias felt welcome from day one. “On my first day, they arranged a lunch for me, and because my daughter had just been born, I received a maternity gift. Those small gestures really make a difference. It is an informal, friendly organization where everyone is open to getting to know each other. Whether you work on location or at the head office.”
Mathias notices that his efforts are recognized and appreciated, and that they actively think along about opportunities for growth. “If you show that you are doing your best, they really look for opportunities to help you develop further,” he says. A concrete example of this is the opportunity Mathias was given to coordinate the project office with another colleague. “Together with a colleague, I manage the communication between locations and municipalities. This is a great extension of my job description and an opportunity to develop myself further.”
And the tips for future colleagues?
“There is so much more than the position you are applying for. The organization offers a huge number of opportunities, even if you do not have a background in real estate. Show yourself, be motivated and be open to new opportunities.”
Mathias also gives advice for reducing the gap between locations and the head office. “Go to events, even if you do not know anyone. You will not be excluded and will quickly get to know new people. These contacts make your work more fun and give you a better picture of the organization!”
A dynamic position
Finally, Mathias emphasizes that the role of caretaker is so much more than people often think. “At first glance, the position may seem like that of a concierge, but the work is incredibly interesting and diverse. No day is the same in this dynamic position!”
